It’s the tax bill, not the rate, that counts

To the editor:

According to your newspaper, taxpayers in Amesbury are angry because the tax rate is high and going up. According to news reports, the rate is going up because the value of homes is going down.

Perhaps I am missing something, but if one pays a higher rate on a lower amount, isn’t the result the same amount? That seems like simple math.

As a taxpayer in Amesbury, I could care less what my rate is. I only care the amount of my actual bill.

Amesbury is a great place to live and anyone who chose to live elsewhere based on the tax rate is missing out.
