Whittier Vo-Tech offers unique opportunities

To the editor:

I recently attended the superintendent’s Advisory Board meeting at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School in Haverhill and I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the unique opportunities that are available to students from Newburyport and surrounding communities as they pursue their future goals and careers.

Students choose their major course of study from one of 20 vocational-technical fields and upon graduation, they receive their high school diploma as well as industry certifications. The diverse available fields of study encompass the specific needs of the current job market. Whittier’s comprehensive academic program includes college preparatory and honors courses. Many students choose to continue their education at leading colleges and they are given the opportunity to earn college credits in advance. During their junior and senior years, co-op jobs are available, which provide on-the-job experience, often resulting in permanent job placement.

It should be noted that Whittier students have excelled in state-mandated MCAS testing with 100 percent passing for the past seven years and earning scores comparable to students enrolled in comprehensive high schools. Quite an achievement.

I encourage parents and students to see for themselves the unlimited prospects available to them. Whittier truly is a hidden jewel.
