Stop bull runs before they start

To the editor:

A plan to hold bull runs throughout Massachusetts is not only cruel, it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. Bulls can weigh up to 1,500 pounds, and it’s reckless to force bulls to clamber through a “course” where they can crash into the sides of barriers and seriously hurt participants or bystanders by panicking or going off-route. Even the event’s organizers acknowledge the risk involved — participants are required to sign waivers acknowledging that the event can leave them gored and maimed.

Worldwide condemnation of Pamplona’s “Running of the Bulls” is growing because it is cruel to animals and dangerous for people. While the humans have a choice as to whether they are willing to place themselves in danger, the animals are involuntary participants.

People who don’t believe animals should be taunted for fun will turn their backs on this cruel promotion, and Massachusetts officials should slam the door shut on this irresponsible plan before they are served with the first personal-injury suit.
