To the editor:
We are grateful to the Newburyport City Council for its unanimous endorsement of a resolution to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to correct existing safety problems at the Seabrook nuclear power plant before considering relicensing the facility. We are especially appreciative of Councilors Barry Connell, Kathleen O'Connor Ives, Edward Cameron and Robert Cronin for cosponsoring the resolution, and of Mayor Donna Holaday for signing onto the measure. We also appreciate the eloquent comments made by other council members, including councilors Thomas Jones and Richard Sullivan, as well as by members of the community.
In the unanimous vote, the Newburyport City Council showed exceptional leadership, sincere commitment to our city's public safety and an understanding of Seabrook nuclear power plant safety issues. This resolution is not a referendum on the Seabrook plant or nuclear power, but evidence of deep concern over deteriorating conditions at the aging power plant.
No More Fukushimas! considers the degradation problems at the 20-year-old Seabrook nuclear power plant to be the paramount safety issue facing our region, and we strongly contend that the power plant owner and operator must fully address safety concerns before the NRC considers extending the Seabrook operating license to 2050.
