I thought I had seen everything, but the NRA’s decision to hire a public relations firm to pull the wool over Newburyporters’ eyes really is the last straw.
Can’t sell enough toothpaste? Hire a PR team. Can’t move that line of gas-guzzling cars? Hire a PR team. Can’t seem to create a stampede of applause for developing the waterfront? What else, hire some PR flacks to do, apparently, what you are incapable of doing yourselves, changing people’s minds. Really, this has become a joke. It’s only too bad that the joke has been ongoing for nearly half a century.
I don’t know about everyone else, but one of the oft-repeated complaints from NRA-ville regarding creating a public park on the site is its cost (grossly exaggerated by James Shanley and the others).
Funny thing, however. If the NRA stopped blowing wads of cash on ill-conceived studies, borings and any number of other pipe dreams, a park would be up and running as we speak. Those parking fees are being grossly wasted by the NRA, year after year after year.
I hope voters in this town haven’t fallen asleep. It’s time we had a mayor who stopped appointing development fanatics on this almost feudal and hereditary board, which has become a mockery of the democratic process. I’m voting for Greg Earls twice, once on primary day and next on the real deal itself in November. I hope all of my friends and acquaintances will do the same.
