A shout-out to young poets, Oregano

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

On Sunday, May 5, the Emma L. Andrews Library & Community Center was delighted to hold its second annual poetry slam practice session for Newburyport High School students, as directed by Deborah Szabo, English teacher at the high school.

The teens performed original poetry in preparation for their appearance in Boston at Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Slam competition on May 18 and May 19 at Mass College of Art.

Parents, friends, neighbors, library volunteers and members all came to lend their ears and offer suggestions to the performers. It was a delightful event that leaves one feeling hopeful about our young people and their future. Ms. Szabo’s teaching, leadership and outreach regarding poetry and creative writing, by now well-known, was also witnessed at the annual Favorite Poem Project.

We especially want to thank Claude Elias of Oregano who provided a generous amount of food to feed hungry performers and their guests. Claude and his Ristorante Oregano remain one of the most generous businesses in our community.

Thanks to all who made this event a success! And best of luck to the Newburyport High School Louder Than A Bomb Team!
