Pennies for Poverty makes a difference

To the editor:

During these hard times, people lending their hands to others make a real difference to the neediest among us. And that is what Pennies for Poverty does. This grass-roots organization, founded several years ago to help local residents in need, encourages cash and food donations, volunteerism and community building, all in the cause of helping each other.

Community Action, Inc. would like to express our deep gratitude on behalf of our clients to Pennies for Poverty, which has granted our Amesbury Center $1,000 this year. Their contributions came at a time of continuing great need among families coping with a struggling economy, rising costs and lost wages. Not only has Pennies helped out with finances, they conducted a food drive this past weekend, which resulted in restocking our food pantry.

The economy has been suffering for years now, and through these times families in need have been visiting the Amesbury Center for help. Last year, for instance, we were able to give out more than 20 tons of food, in addition to clothing, rental and utility assistance. Families may visit our pantry for food and clothing twice each month and we are always challenged with keeping the shelves well supplied.

Donations such as Pennies’ help us fulfill our mission to provide resources and opportunities for individuals, families and communities to overcome poverty. We work closely with other agencies to stretch the available dollars and to help as many people as we can. People helping people — that is what Pennies for Poverty is about, and it is what Community Action does, with the help of individuals and organizations such as Pennies in the communities we serve.
