To the editor:
The Newburyport Public Library would like to congratulate all of the children in town who participated in the library’s Summer Reading Program: “Dig Into Reading!” Summer reading is extremely important; kids who read over the summer keep their reading skills sharp and do not need to relearn those skills when the next school year begins.
To that end, over 800 children signed up for “Dig Into Reading!” Sixty-five percent of those read five books and earned a coupon for free frozen yogurt at Orange Leaf. Of those kids, 401 read at least 10 books and earned a free prize book and a ticket to the Topsfield Fair.
To summarize, Newburyport children read almost 8,000 books this summer. Wow!
The library also provided a new early literacy Summer Reading Program. One hundred fifty children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers signed up to complete 20 short literacy tasks. Kids who completed 10 of those received a free children’s music CD. Children who completed all 20 received a certificate.
The Summer Reading Program would not have been possible without a lot of support from local groups and merchants. The Newburyport Public Library would like to thank our major sponsors for their incredible generosity: The Friends of the Newburyport Public Library, the Topsfield Fair and the Newburyport Orange Leaf.
In addition, the following merchants made donations used for fun programs and coveted prizes: the Newburyport Shaw’s, Express Video, Joppa Fine Foods, the Newburyport Starbucks, the Newburyport Richdale, Vision Max Cinemas of Salisbury, Lively Kids, Pretty Poppy, the Newburyport Wendy’s, Soak, Chococoa, BodySense, Winfrey’s, Middle Street Foods, Eureka!, Soufflés, Eat Cake, Greta’s, Macro Polo and Beach Plum Too.
The City of Newburyport rallied in every way to make the Summer Reading Program one of the most successful in the history of the Newburyport Public Library. NPL staff is so proud of all of the children who were rabid readers this summer. Way to go!
