Master plan needed for waterfront

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Why is there no master plan for the entire waterfront area? There appears to be the possibility of considerable commercial development on both sides of the central waterfront, and without a master plan we can find ourselves overdeveloped with little consideration for parking, traffic control or the overall effect on the downtown.

We the citizens and taxpayers are going to pay for this one way or the other over the coming years unless we take a long look at the larger picture. We all know this is going to happen, but again why is there no master plan?

In that context, with all the construction on both sides, it makes little sense selling off our existing open waterfront space and parking. A master plan would immediately make this apparent, and it might be the only part we can control. I can now understand why the NRA is in such a rush to do their developing. Once their massive buildings are in place, we’re stuck with them for a long long time. The hotel was stopped and so can this.
