This is why bridge was named for Hayden

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

As a response to Mr. Fred Thurlow’s letter about the Route 1A bridge in Newbury being named for someone not from Newbury, maybe he should reread the story first printed on June 26. The fact is that the naming of the bridge after my brother, John B. Hayden was because he worked hard and was known for his integrity in Mass Highway (DOT). John’s work was not just for “Newburyites,” but for the region as a whole.

Did Mr. Thurlow have another name in mind? If he did, did he contact the local rep and senator? Mr. Thurlow said that the bridge stood for 250 years without being named. Was Mr. Thurlow also aware that John suspected the bridge was in disrepair and was the only one available to drive on the bridge and did not like what he saw? And in his report he pushed for the rebuilding of the bridge for the safety of everyone who traverses it.
