Amesbury tax rate is outrageous

To the Editor:

I am urging every Amesbury taxpayer to speak up in opposing the mayor andthe city council’s plan to raise the tax rate to $20.24. Even without this increase, Amesbury holds the unenviable position of having one of the highest tax rates in Massachusetts.

It is unreasonable to raise the rate when home values are falling, and we are experiencing difficult economic times. What a blatant disregard for the Amesbury taxpayer!

Instead, the mayor and the city council should seriously consider using free cash to lower the rate an option which was successfully used by the mayor of Newburyport due to her deep concern for her city’s taxpayers.

Using free cash and implementing budget cuts would be welcomed alternatives. Every Amesbury taxpayer should attend the council meeting on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. to voice their outrage.
