Amazing support for Annual Food Drive

To the editor:

This past weekend the Police Department held its 7th Annual Food Drive to assist the Salvation Army’s food pantry. I cannot begin to express my sincere appreciation to all the people who came by and donated. The outpouring of support was incredible, making this the best year to date.

I want to thank Market Basket and Shaw’s for their continued support of this food drive and the assistance they give us throughout the year. Throughout the day employees from both stores went out of their way to help, whether it was making the prepackaged bags or offering assistance to customers and our volunteers.

These events could not happen without those working behind the scene including 911 dispatcher Amy West, who took the lead in organizing, coordinating and working the event along with Melissa Leary, dispatcher Tori Smith, officers Charles Eaton, Charles Ferlauto, Joshua Tierney, Megan Muldowney, John Gavin, Eric Andrukaitis, Richard Rocco, Ron Senter and Lt. Richard Siemasko.

Allen Frost from Newburyport Department of Public Services helped by setting up the message-boards, and assisting during the collection, The Newburyport Daily News and Famous Pizza for feeding volunteers. The Newburyport High School Hockey Team spent the day with us carrying bags, loading the trucks and assisting inside the stores.

Having worked in this community for over35 years, I’m so impressed with the continued community outpouring to assist those in need. This was so evident as I witnessed not only the number of people offering assistance, but those who themselves are struggling making a donation. It is truly amazing!
