To the editor:

Elizabeth Della Piana, Jack Garvey and others have uttered the usual refrain from the left, i.e., "I want someone else to pay my bills." We now have a single-payer health care system; that is, I am the single payer for my family's health care. What others want, of course, is for me to be the single payer for their health care also. For those who want Canadian- or European-style health care, it is readily available — in Canada or Europe.

Regarding the Limbaugh controversy. Isn't it funny how some are so bothered by Limbaugh, yet have no problem with a left-winger like Keith Olberman hosting Sunday night football.

Finally with regard to the professor who was "appalled" at the lack of subservience at John "Taliban" Tierney's town hall meeting: Funny, I must have missed his letter decrying some of the rhetoric thrown at then President Bush.

CVS plan ought to be shelved

It seems to be a long shot that the Newburyport City Council will pass a zoning change allowing a 24-hour CVS Pharmacy to be built along a busy stretch of Storey Avenue. It's an uphill battle to get the 8 votes on the 11-member council, and the voice of neighborhood opposition appears to be strong enough to convince just enough councilors to vote against it.

A threat we all must fight

I read a report this week (Gallup) that two out of every three of us believe our greatest concerns are for our government that has grown too big, too intrusive, too costly and is too demanding of us. The percentages are important to the conduct and outcome of this election.

Seabrook evacuation plan still lacking

To the editor:
I was delighted to read that Councilor Dick Sullivan Jr. mentioned the issue of evacuation in the context of the discussion of extending Seabrook Station's operating license. Evacuation concerns, especially during the summer months, were a concern from the start and were raised back when the original license was being discussed — and Dick Sullivan Sr. was the mayor!

Amesbury collecting too much in fees

To the editor:
Over the last six years Amesbury raised the water/sewer user rate four times. The last one occurred Dec. 1, 2011, for over $300,000. The process was as follows:
The special committee opened the noticed meeting at 6:08 p.m., and in 16 minutes it closed, raising over $300,000 in new water/sewer user charges as of Jan. 1 of the next calendar year.

Those who follow the National Football League closely have heard the bad prognostications about Sunday's big event. According to the latest predictions by the experts, the New England Patriots don't match up very well against the New York Giants. Many professional analysts are now seeing the Super Bowl going the Giants' way, if only by a heartbreakingly small margin.
