To the editor:
Well into the 21st century now, are we sure we are preparing the thinkers, doers and leaders of tomorrow? If we are concerned about the challenges facing our nation, do we have a plan for making a positive difference? Although the mission of the Newburyport Education Foundation is "generating financial resources to enhance the quality of education in Newburyport Public Schools," what we are really about is being a vehicle for your action. You can make a difference today that will change a child's attitude about learning — and about the role he or she can play in our world.
In September, a group of five stepped up to make a difference today by organizing the first Annual NEF Open that raised $12,700 for the Newburyport Public Schools. We want to thank Jack Bortz, Jeff Gray, Jim Hurst, Jay Iannini, and Jeff Sirek for orchestrating this successful and fun-filled event. We also want to thank the 84 golfers who participated and in turn benefitted the schools. And we want to thank the local businesses and people who kindly made the day possible: Abenaqui Country Club, Alden Merrill, Amesbury Skate & Sport, Andover Dermatology, Barclays, The Black Dog, Blatman, Bobrowski & Mead LLC, The Bortz Family, The Boston Company Asset Management LLC, Bottomline Technologies, Committee to Elect Donna Holaday, Committee to Elect James Shanley, David Gray, Time Warner Cable, Hampden Engineering Corp., Honda North, Institution for Savings, Life Is Good, Mike Mullins of Stone Ridge Properties, Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, Oregano Pizzeria & Ristorante, the Park Family, Provident Bank, Publishing Services, Robie Properties, state Sen. Steve Baddour, state Rep. Michael Costello, Sullivan Insurance, The Gray Family, Toscano & Ardito PC CPA, Transcor Information Technologies, Xoft Inc. and the Sirek Family.
This fundraiser has helped us to get closer our 2009 fundraising goals for the Newburyport Public Schools to support technology upgrades and renewal, literacy closets, the Virtual High School, high school science labs and more. This year the NEF continues to raise money for these initiatives as well as the new Nock Music Lab, a state-of-the-art laboratory in which all students have hands-on experiences learning about and composing music.
Again, we sincerely thank all the hard working volunteers and donors. Together, we are making a difference today.
