To the editor:
We wish to thank all who came together in support of BOAT CAMP's nature education programs at our second annual BOAT CAMP Bash, held at the Black Cow Tap and Grill earlier this month. Together, we raised $20K. This included a joyful, spontaneous in-kind gift of a small Boston Whaler skiff, which will be put to great use with kids this summer.
Guests at the Bash were also the very first to learn of our new name. As Capt. Rob and I shared with those in attendance, BOAT CAMP Inc. had outgrown its name, which no longer fully reflected our range of programs that we now offer, year-round, among all ages. So, late in January, we changed our name to BOAT CAMP Nature School Inc. Thanks to Swimfish and Jen Wright Signs, we also have a new logo, sure to be seen on kids' T-shirts this summer!
In his opening remarks, Capt. Rob also explained BOAT CAMP's desire to acquire property ashore on which to create an untouched, sacred place for kids, families and teachers to further explore and connect with nature during both the non-boating season and in summer.
"Our education programs can't be just about the oceans, because land affects what happens out there. And they can't be just about the land, because the oceans affect the land," he said. "We've found it's best to teach kids about nature appreciation on land when they're little. Then ,they graduate to exploring rivers and oceans by boat as they grow older."
Our goal, he explained, through our many programs, is to cultivate a community of "kids who are connected to nature — not just the land, not just the ocean, but both — are nature smart and will make the right decisions as, ultimately, the earth belongs to them."
For their enthusiastic support of our mission to provide meaningful, nature-smart education outdoors to inspire lifelong connects to land and sea, we wish to applaud the following individuals and businesses: Lead Event Sponsor — Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank; Admiral Sponsors — Plum Island Surf Company and Jen Wright Signs, Francee and Michael Quinlan; Captain Sponsors — Mary Gene and John Clavin, Dr. Daryl Colden and Kristin Tallman, Jocelyn Hughes, Steve and Janet Lyons, Sally Milliken and Jim Dooling, John and Michelle Morris, Amy and Brooks Patterson, Rob and Kate Yeomans; Navigator Sponsors — Steve Bloom and Calli Towne, Nancy and Jim Corbett, Jump Start Youth Connection, Inc., Gail and Joe Kowalczyk, Kerry Lagueux and Emily Russin, Kerri and Tim Perry, Grant Proops and Tamah French, Elizabeth and Spencer Purinton; In-Kind Donations — Black Cow Tap and Grill, Bonnie Bowes, Brookwood School, Alan Bull, Carry Out Cafe, Charity Fundraising Packages, Fernald's Marine, F/V Erica Lee, Inc., Nancy Forristall, Meaghan and Leon Gibbs, Newburyport Framers, Coco Haseltine, Judy and Jim Hilton, Olde Newbury Golf Course, Hoist Away Bags, Off Our Wall Gallery, Ryan and Niki Pavao, Plum Island Grille, Port City Sandwich Company, Seaglass Signs, Top Shelf Lacrosse Camp, and Watch City Brewing Company.

Finally, such a fantastic celebration would not have been possible without the gracious hosting of the event by the Black Cow Tap and Grill, which closed to the public so that our more than 100 guests could enjoy a private affair, and the exceptional kindness and dedication of our talented Bash Committee chairs: Ann Caron, Mary Gene Clavin, Nancy Corbett, Sally Milliken, Amy Patterson, Kerri Perry, Elizabeth Purinton, France Quinlan, Amy Swiniarski, and Jen Wright.
Oh what a night!
