Gomez is our choice for US senator

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

The commonwealth’s electorate has a valuable opportunity to send a singular candidate to Washington, D.C., this approaching special election. It is our honor and privilege to support Gabriel Gomez as a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Gabriel is the proud son of Colombian immigrants who came to the United States to create a better life for their children. Gabriel’s mother spoke only a few words of English, Gabriel’s childhood experience shaping Spanish as his first language. Even with the challenges of immigrating to a new country, Gabriel’s family and upbringing helped him to recognize, appreciate, the distinct place America holds in people’s minds throughout the world, those who would seek a better life. America welcomed his parents, his family; Gabriel decided early in life that he would give back to his country.

Gabriel’s life path has been extraordinary, attending the U.S. Naval Academy, and upon graduation, he completed flight school and served as a Naval aviator, a carrier pilot. Gabriel’s service, his commitment, then further extended in service to others. Gabriel transferred to the Navy’s Special Warfare community, serving as a platoon commander among the elite Navy SEAL teams. After his Naval service, Gabriel attended Harvard Business School, receiving his MBA in 1996. Gabriel, upon graduation from Harvard, joined the private sector, assisting pension funds in their investing for growth, and working with numerous companies, many now household names.

It is our heartfelt wish that voters will embrace and appreciate Gabriel Gomez as much as we do. Gabriel is an optimist in these most difficult times and a leader, where many others are followers, at an impasse. We are proud to support a man who has served his country with distinction, who will lead by example. In such, Gabriel will encourage, as always, others to serve their country, to go to work each day, to live by the ethos non sibi sed aliis — not for self, but for others.

The people of Massachusetts deserve a person of great character, achievement and integrity to serve them in the United States Senate. Gabriel Gomez is a man compelled by his commitment to serve, his conduct governed by an ethos, men-for-others, one of honor, courage and commitment. Gabriel will bring his spirit of leadership to the Senate Chambers, a brand of decent, compassionate, common-sense leadership, perhaps fashioned by that first quality of leadership, humility. Gabriel Gomez will make a profound difference.

Please vote your heart and mind on April 30 and June 25.
