What Christmas is really about

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

This is a very busy time of year. We run around buying presents for friends and family, trying to find the perfect gift. Christmas decorations are out in stores before Halloween, and many stores are open before midnight on Black Friday.

It may not be our intention, but I think we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and forget the real meaning of why we do all of this in the first place.

Recent events, I’m sure, have made many of us stop and think about what is really important to us. There is a man I know who doesn’t need a tragedy to remind him of what the spirit of Christmas really means.

He is the personification of the Christmas season all year long, giving of himself in every way. There is not a person who has ever met Glenn Peterson who would disagree with me.

As my father, I’m sure he said to me once or twice, “You’ll thank me for this some day … .” When that day finally came, I did thank him, and I’ve been thanking him everyday since.

Now that I have my own little girl, I am grateful that she has someone like her Papa to look up to (even if he acts more like a kid than she does when they are together).

We all try to set good examples for our children, and we hope they take what we teach them to make the right decisions as they grow and learn. I’m glad that I have such a wonderful role model in my dad.

Thank you, Dad, for being my hero. I love you!
