Thanks for supporting troops, dinner

To the editor:

This December, VFW Post 2016 held our 11th Annual Support the Troops Christmas Dinner. This dinner gives an opportunity for the local community to gather together and “break bread” with the local military men and women and their families who are serving our country and who are fortunate to be home for the holiday. It is a chance to give them thanks and to show our appreciation for the sacrifices they make so that we can wake up each morning to enjoy our way of life. This event has been such a success that it has been used throughout the country as a model for other communities to link with its own local military.

Although VFW Post 2016 organizes the Support the Troops Christmas Dinner, it is the players behind the scene that make this event a possibility. We would like to thank our financial supporters —Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, The Provident Bank, Institution for Savings, Amesbury Police Officers Association, Eugene A. Twomey, Sr. DAV Post #40, American Legion Post 187, Bob Levesque, Challenge Engineering, Gould Insurance and the Polish Club of Amesbury.

Others who offered their services were: Holy Family Parish, Italian-American Band of Lawrence, Amesbury Police and Fire Color Guard led by Sgt. Rick Poulin, Dawn Baxter and her family for the table settings, Denny Nadeau and Peggy Bisson and their Holy Family Parish kitchen crew, Boy Scouts Troop 4, the Cashman Elementary School Chorus led by Johanna Hoyt Kimball, singer Dan Cleary, Pastor Jamie Arrison of the Rock Church for leading us in prayer, The Daily News for news and photo coverage of our event, and Amesbury police officer Tom Hanshaw for his article in the Amesbury News.

Most of all, we would like to thank the local men and women who are serving in the armed forces and especially their families who are truly the unsung heroes. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.
