Thanks for spreading news about Whittier

To the editor:

We, the board and members of the John Greenleaf Whittier Home Museum, 86 Friend St., wish to express our thanks for the continued support of local news media in bringing the outstanding history of leading abolitionist, poet, John Greenleaf Whittier to the larger community.

Local cable stations, through the efforts of Larry Frost (”Our Town” show, Cable 12 Thursdays) and our board, resulted in the recent and timely airing of Whittier’s famous winter idyll, “Snowbound,” read in completeness as the first snow fell by Gus Reusch, curator of the Whittier Homestead, who gave the presentation last year. (It can be viewed on YouTube.) We received many favorable comments.

Thank you to Sonja Vartabedian, editor of The Newburyport Magazine, staff writer Mac Cerullo and photographer Bryan Eaton, for an excellent piece on Whittier’s legacy in the recent Winter 2012 edition.

Thanks to The Daily News, Newburyport Current, The Amesbury News, Carol Feingold, WNBP, Carraigetown News, The Town Common and The Boston Globe for reporting the many activities and programs of the JGW Home Museum.

Discover something new about one of America’s finest poets in a new Rex Video DVD biography available locally at the Whittier Home.

Ben Pickard, professor of English, published author, historian, says: “The DVD is an excellent, beautifully photographed and well-narrated account of Whittier’s life … the photos and narrative give the story a special quality and I think the film does capture the essence of what Whittier was and what he meant to his times.”

As stewards for the preservation of the collections, structures and grounds of the Whittier Home Museum, the Whittier Home Association will use funds from this DVD to update educational programs, continue capital improvements and keep this National Historic Landmark viable for years to come.
