Ed Markey is right choice for senator

To the editor:

An election is in the works for a new junior senator from Massachusetts and we at No More Fukushimas! proudly endorse Congressman Ed Markey. He has worked to improve public safety for years now. He has always ‘had the back’ of area families regarding safety at the Seabrook nuclear power plant. As he runs for US Senate, it is our turn to have his back.

The record shows the following concerning Representative Markey’s activity:

1. He has raised questions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about the ongoing problem of concrete degradation at the Seabrook plant which has caused many to doubt its safe operation

2. He has pressured the NRC to convene local public hearings about concrete degradation and other safety issues at the plant

3. He has co-sponsored the “Nuclear Safety First Act” (HR6554) with Congressman Tierney which would prevent the re-licensing of nuclear power plants prior to ten years before their licenses expire.

The choice in the general election should be readily apparent. Scott Brown, the likely opponent in the race for US Senate, has raised no such issues. He has done nothing on behalf of public safety. He seems far more committed to the financial security of nuclear plant investors than he does to the safety of his constituents.

Ed Markey has fought the NRC numerous times on behalf of people in Massachusetts. He has consistently urged the NRC to apply the lessons learned from the Fukushima disaster to nuclear power plant oversight.

Please join us in supporting Congressman Ed Markey for US Senate because of his unrivaled leadership in supporting the safety of Massachusetts citizens.
