NRA 'mission' is out of date

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Patricia Dorfman says the NRA mission statement is recited at every meeting, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not out of date.

The fact that it starts “the mission of the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority is to revitalize blighted or deteriorated areas of the city” is a perfect example of how out of touch the NRA members are with the rest of us. There are no blighted or deteriorated areas of the city anymore! The waterfront certainly can use some improvement, but it’s not blighted or deteriorated.

The fact is that the NRA owns the land and only exists because of an obsolete mission statement. It’s actually holding the city back from fully developing the waterfront from its potential as a prime destination for tourists and residents alike.

Large buildings and condos don’t do that. And using the word “openness” doesn’t change the fact that the park will no longer be open. It is not aesthetically preferable for most of us lose our views of the river because a condo is in the way.
