We need a few more good women

To the editor:

We are fortunate in Newburyport to have great governance including an outstanding mayor and City Council. There is one thing that feels amiss. With the departure of Councilor O’Connor Ives, one woman remains on the Newburyport City Council. Women comprise a majority of the city’s population and registered voters, so it just does not feel right that a progressive city like Newburyport has one woman councilor.

It is not the council’s fault — it is our fault. We need women to continue to step up for council openings and our leaders to encourage participation among this key demographic — now.

Our city is rich in highly qualified, exceptional female candidates — let’s make some noise for them! I admit to hoping that progressive women candidates run, but a nearly all-male council does not feel right for Newburyport.
