Close the door on welfare fraud

To the editor:

Recent news reports having to do with welfare fraud should anger the taxpayer. The first report in today’s Boston news outlets describes how money is being wasted on recipients who are not eligible to receive state benefits. This suspected fraud amounts to over $25,000,000 per year.

The second report concerned a letter that was sent to all benefit recipients prior to the November election informing them of their voter rights. Alarmingly, 19,000 letters were returned as addressee unknown or undeliverable. Apparently there is little verification taking place to determine eligibility of the recipient.

I suspect the governor will dismiss these reports as being “anecdotal” and the amount being a mere pittance in the billion-dollar state budget, but it frustrates me. I have contacted my representative and senator and asked them to resist any new taxes being enacted until the welfare fraud is eliminated (if that is possible). I hope that the readers will also contact their local representatives and let them know what they think about new taxes.

Sen. Kathleen O’Connor Ives (617-722-1604) and Rep. Mike Costello (617-722-2220).
