Opposed to relicensing of N-plant

To the editor:

As members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), we, the Amesbury Friends Meeting, believe we are called to be good stewards of the earth.

The destruction of life and the degradation of nature have been, and continue to be, ongoing consequences of the use of nuclear technology, whether through weaponization, accident, natural disaster or mismanagement.

As a result of these concerns, Amesbury Friends Meeting urges the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to deny NextEra Energy of Seabrook a new 20-year license extension for the Seabrook nuclear power plant. The plant is already licensed for the next 19 years — this new license would begin in the year 2030 and end in the year 2050. Given this time line, we feel there is no need for a hasty decision by the NRC by March 2012.

In the wake of the Fukushima meltdown and additional aging and safety issues, we believe there is simply no way that the NRC can guarantee that the reactor will remain safe for almost 40 years from now. Further, we can only imagine what new, safer energy technologies will be developed in the coming decades, making nuclear power not only unsafe, but obsolete.

For our children's sake and for their children's sake, let us choose now to take up our stewardship commitment, fully accepting our responsibilities to care for our planet and its peoples. We urge others to do the same.
