Replace puppy mills with puppy love

To the editor:

Have you ever taken time to think about where your puppy came from? Obviously from his mother. Well, what about his mother ... what happened to her? When you went to the pet store to get your new little puppy, did you see his mother there? Most likely, his mother is back at the puppy mill, a breeding center where people make a profit selling dogs to your local pet store. You think ... what's so bad about that? We have been buying puppies from pet stores for ... ever! It's not like they are sick or anything ...

Well, I'll tell you. After researching this issue for my class, I learned that back at the "breeding center" most distinguished as a puppy mill, dogs die because of the inhumane conditions they are kept in. It's not fair to them. Suffering because of greedy people. The dogs pick up many different types of diseases and disorders. The environment they are kept in is practically a death sentence. In the summer, the dogs literally "cook" in their cages due to no air conditioning, and the metal cages heat up and blister their paws and skin. Sounds painful, right? In the winter, because the cages are outside all year long, they freeze and have no heat and depend on the warmth of their caged companions. Can you believe that "we" would allow such a thing, to let this cruelty go on, to let these innocent animals die?

Here is another fact: Did you know that some people de-bark their dogs? They rupture their vocal cord with a tool. I'm writing this letter to help these animals, to convert everyone to this new religion, "puppy love." What you have to do is very simple. All you have to do is pass on this message and stop supporting the mills. Stop buying supplies from pet stores that sell puppies and kittens unless you know the breeder and the mother dog. Instead, go to a shelter and adopt a dog; they need a good home and a loving family. You could also go to a vet and have him recommend a good place to get a puppy.

This topic inspired me when I first heard about what a puppy mill was. I thought, how could someone go on raising animals like this? Perhaps someone without a heart, someone who doesn't care? Or maybe it's just they don't have a passion for animals like I do. As I sit here typing, I think, how do they live with themselves, knowing they are putting innocent lives in pain? Out of all this research I did, I just hope this letter inspired you into doing something about it. Please consider it: The puppies need your help.
