Obama must not cross his own red line

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

President Obama has asked Congress for approval to shoot missiles at Syria, which will kill additional innocent people. Of course, Congress is on vacation, which obviously takes precedence over deciding on whether we should go to war or not. It almost sounds like a Woody Allen movie except this is not funny. Syria has been given time to move weapons and prepare for a strike.

The underlying problem, the chemical weapons plant, cannot be a target since it will release the chemicals into the air. Guaranteed, if oil was not involved, we would not be even thinking about doing this. Remember, Iran and Saudi Arabia are heavily involved as well. There are other countries where atrocities are happening which we don’t care about.

Shooting missiles at a country will not change the underlying problem of idiots whose radical religious ideas are wreaking havoc in the world. I honestly do not see a solution to this problem unless parents start teaching their children to accept other people’s ideas, races and religions. Even if President Bashar al-Assad is removed from power, who’s to say another tyrant will not take over and make matters worse?

An attack on Syria risks a regional war that could be disastrous. And within the U.S., additional Boston Marathon bombing radical copycats due to anger over the attacks are waiting in the wings. Mr.

President, please do not cross your own red line.
