How can buildings create open space?

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

If your neighbor told you he was planning to build a three-story garage on his driveway in order to create more open space on his property, you’d think he had lost his grip on reality, or at least the laws of physics.

To my mind, it is no different when I listen to the NRA talk about their plans for the waterfront. In this case, though, the land doesn’t belong to my neighbor — it belongs to all of us. I think of it as our downtown’s front lawn.

There are better, logical ideas for improving and finishing our waterfront lots, like mayoral candidate Greg Earls’ plan. His idea uses no tax dollars and keeps the land as public open space.
