Newburyport Daily News
---- — To the editor:
A goodly number of anti-war and pro-peace people held a candlelight vigil opposing the threat of war with Syria at 7 p.m. on Monday night, Sept. 9, in Market Square, just a few blocks from The Daily News offices. In the following day’s paper was a silly letter from somebody in Amesbury asserting that the anti-war faction was silent. To correct that ignorant notion, there are some statistics gathered by one of the many pro-peace organizations that supported vigils nationwide on Monday night, received today via email. Here are the actual statistics:
165 vigils were held in 41 states from coast to coast.
7,000 people RSVP’d to appeals to gather — including folks from MoveOn, PCCC, Credo Action, USAction and other Win Without War allies.
More than 1,000 stories in local and national newspapers and broadcasts.
America’s anti-war citizens may be peaceable and respectful, but they are certainly not silent. And they have been letting their representatives and senators know how they feel, as Mr. Tierney recently observed.
