A proposal for Girl Scout land in Rowley

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

We are writing this letter in response to your Sept. 3 article entitled “Interest in the Girl Scout Camp heats up.” We are two women interested in utilizing the camp portion of the 390 Wethersfield St. property and we would like to share some information regarding our proposal.

It is not our intention to buy the 200-plus acres and maintain a private business, but rather we would like to work as partners with the town. We are hopeful that the people of Rowley would use this land for cross-country skiing, hiking, bikingand other outdoor activities. We want to maintain the beauty and usefulness of the property, while simultaneously providing additional income for the town.

We propose a collaboration that would entail leasing the camp structures so that we may provide children and teens with medical or mental health needs (i.e., cystic fibrosis, autism, obesity, anxiety, diabetes, etc.), an experience they may otherwise miss. We do not want to inundate the town by growing the camp too large, nor do we wish to utilize this asset for free. We welcome continued discussion and are encouraged by the interest and excitement that has been voiced by residents, local medical personnel and parents. We would also like to thank the selectmen for giving us the opportunity to share our vision and hopes for this property and the children we could serve.
