A surreal evening with the NRA

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

The recent meeting of the NRA on Wednesday the 18th of September was a surreal event. Everyone knows that Hurricane Sandy could just as easily have hit here instead of New York. Among the damage in New York City was the flooding of part of the subway and the evacuation of patients from two major hospitals.

With all the board members of the NRA nodding their heads seriously, an engineer speaker was explaining how they could install waterproof doors to keep the flood water out of the proposed underground parking garages which are there to service the 32 condos above.

Those of you reading this, who were not at the meeting, could be forgiven for thinking that I am making this up; but swear this is what was said! Waterproof doors! This sounds like an ocean liner that is about to hit an iceberg or be hit by a torpedo! “Batten down the hatches boys — close the waterproof doors, there’s a storm surge coming.
