No extortion needed

To the editor:

I’d like to comment on Barbara Anderson’s position in the article “Government shutdown ... ,” from Oct. 1.

Anderson is either profoundly misinformed or tragically dishonest. Her comments are riddled with cynicism and provocation. Yes, the U.S. House has the power of the purse. It does not have unilateral power to change law. If Anderson or anybody else prefers to change a law there is a process for that. Secure the appropriate number of votes in each chamber of Congress and obtain the signature of the president. No extortion necessary.
