It is time for all citizens to voice their opposition to the government shutdown. Many people feel there is little an individual can do, but many individuals together make all the difference. Indifference is the enemy of democracy and a shameful response to the many lives sacrificed so that we may live in a free, democratic society. It does not matter if you are conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican, we need you to demand that our representative in governments do their job and govern.
We all need to send a message to our government, “I’m mad as hell and I can’t take it anymore.” Howard Beale said these lines in the mid-’70s movie “Network” and they seem quite appropriate today. We are not helpless in the face of our government shutdown. We need to be vocal and make our elected officials accountable.
In the past we have seen the intractable forces of neanderthal politics washed away by the spirit of the people rising up in revolt. There are many, many examples from women’s suffrage to the environmental issues of the current day. One prime example is civil rights where a group of senators blocked action for many years until the late 1950s, when the irresistible tide of public sentiment sparked the conversion of then Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson as a leader of a new age of civil rights action. The people spoke loudly enough and action ensued. Please, please make your voice heard today.
