A chance for candidates to make views known

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

I would like to thank all the candidates who came out to speak on Sunday, Oct. 6, on the Market Square Bullnose. It was a little chilly and wet, but the turnout of candidates was impressive. Although there was a light turnout of residents, several did pass by and stopped to listen.

There are several new persons running for office. This event gave them a chance to practice their skills, speaking not only in front of others but also with their opponents in sight. Everyone followed my request to remain civil, state why they were running for office and discuss their ideas. They were all keeping their statements brief in order to give everyone a chance to speak.

Other than the rain, I would say I was disappointed that candidates Tom Jones, Tom O’Brien and Mayor Holaday did not respond to my invitation. I respectfully sent email invitations, yet no response.

I am sure we will all be looking forward to what each candidate has to say in the weeks to come. I encourage everyone who is 18 and older to register to vote at City Hall. We are fortunate to have the freedom to vote — let’s use it!
