Wally Perkins would have loved this one

To the editor:

Way back in 1978 after we moved to Merrimac from New York, by way of Missouri, one of the positions in town government that caught our eye was that of fence viewer. Where but in a small New England town would there be such a titled position? After we finally met Wally, we knew the right man was on the job.

When we saw the rustic stone wall on the Church Street side of the cemetery being removed, we wondered what would replace it. We heard the new fence would be aluminum and granite and what immediately came to mind were the barriers along highways.

The new fence is aluminum and granite but a far cry from highway barriers — it’s beautiful. We don’t know if the Cemetery Committee or the Public Works commissioner is responsible for the design of the fence, but we’re sure Wally Perkins would have loved this one.
