Amesbury needs to re-elect Kelcourse

To the editor:

The Sept. 30 Daily News headline blared: “In Amesbury, a deep political divide”; in discussing this, the News reported that three incumbent councilors state “they are neutral” but goes on to say, “ … (Jim) Kelcourse is the only candidate whose signs seem to appear on the lawns of both sides.” This reflects his hard work in listening to all sides, understanding the issues and voting, with great conviction, for the best interests of all citizens.

Son of a local business owner of 40 years, Jim and his wife are parents to two preschool sons. He was a student athlete at Amesbury High and received a four-year student-athlete scholarship to Villanova University. He continued on to receive his MBA. While working full time, Jim studied nights to get his juris doctor degree. After serving one year on the Planning Board, Jim was elected councilor at-large in 2009. He has his own law office in Newburyport. In addition to his professional and the council responsibilities, Jim is active in several area civic service organizations.

A prominent Amesbury resident describes Jim as “fiercely independent … asking the right questions to enable him to make difficult votes on behalf of his constituents.”

As a councilor, Jim’s efforts have been directed toward relief for residential taxpayers through expansion of commercial and business properties. He is also committed to a new paradigm for problem-solving and improving the school system. Over his terms in office, he has become a dedicated budget monitor to control taxes. As a proven, open-minded problem-solver, he will be the link across any divide in the City Council.

Jim is a fine, decent, talented person who understands the citizens’ needs and puts them first. Jim is a man you’d be proud to have as your next-door neighbor. So, please join me in supporting him for re-election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
