Mayor didn't answer questions

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

I am writing to you because I am extremely concerned about communication from the Newburyport mayor’s office.

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, I asked the mayor to please read the Boston Herald article, “Jury: Firm must pay $26M; Hub developer hit with verdict on soured land deal.” To sum up the story on Jan. 30, 2010, a jury decided on Jan 22, 2010, after two weeks of testimony in federal court in Houston, that the New England Development entities made negligent and fraudulent misrepresentations and should pay the plaintiff compensatory damages of $25.5 million in lost profits and $534,380 in expenses.

What I’ll never understand is after asking the mayor a total of three times to respond to me (Jan 30, 2010, Feb. 4, 2011, Feb. 5, 2012), why does the mayor refuse to do so? All I read is how a hotel on Titcomb Street is to be built by New England Development. The mayor applauds these efforts, as the mayor first ran on an open waterfront during the initial election process.

I’ll ask now, what is to be believed? Why do elected officials refuse to answer letters?
