The re-roundabout and its cost

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

On Oct. 25, The Daily News ran a front-page story on “fixing a flaw” in the roundabout. The granite cobblestones have been removed and workers will be employed through Nov. 1 laying concrete.

For me this is the kicker: The project is still projected, by the Department of Transportation, to be under budget and on time. I wonder how much the redesign, etc. is in fact costing — the city? The state? The citizens of the commonwealth? Just think, if the project had been well designed and executed from the get-go, the project would be completed not only under budget, but way under budget.

And then money could have been available for other state transportation projects.

But as it is, someone will probably be lauded for the “new” re-roundabout.

And I do wonder what will be the final disposition of those granite cobblestones.
