To the editor:
Forty years ago Whittier Technical High School in Haverhill opened its doors to 11 surrounding communities including Newburyport, providing students with the opportunity to pursue their education in a vibrant and dynamic environment leading to career choices encompassing 20 vocational-technical courses of study resulting in a high school diploma and an industry certification tailored to the specific current job market needs. A new program, Hospitality Management, is in the works and has recently been approved as Whittier continues to upgrade and enhance their programs of study in keeping pace with the ever-changing employment situation. Also, a large number of students have continued their education at leading colleges/universities. On average 92 percent of the senior graduates end up working in their vocational field while 70 percent go into higher education (2/4 year or technical colleges).
Students at Whittier are given every opportunity to excel, as evidenced in the recent MCAS scores. One hundred percent of the sophomore class who took the English MCAS last spring passed it. Ninety-five percent of those students reached advanced or proficient levels on the first try! On the math MCAS, 96.3 percent passed and 97 percent passed the science and technology MCAS.
This means Whittier maintains its rating as a Level 1 school for meeting all of its performance benchmarks set by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. What a wonderful accomplishment to be acknowledged and recognized for. On Sunday, Nov. 4, Whittier will be holding its annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Exhibits and demonstrations will be presented with staff and students ready to answer any questions you might have.
It is a wonderful opportunity not only for prospective students but for the general public to experience and be aware of this most worthwhile and rewarding institution of learning.
