Holaday is best choice for Newburyport mayor

The Newburyport Mayor’s Task Force to Reduce Substance Abuse recently received $125,000 to continue its work to combat underage use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Efforts such as this are just one example of how Newburyport – under Mayor Holaday’s leadership – has been effectively utilizing federal resources to meet demanding local challenges.

In our district, I am privileged to work with state and local officials who understand the needs of the communities they represent and who constructively work with me to see how the federal government can assist with addressing those needs. Mayor Donna Holaday certainly stands out with the best of these fine local leaders.

Newburyport received its designation as a Coast Guard City thanks in large part to Mayor Holaday’s commitment and keen understanding of how to successfully work with federal departments and other elected officials. Ground was recently broken on the Whittier Bridge project, which will create or sustain as many as 400 direct construction jobs and 1,100 indirect jobs over a two-year period. Mayor Holaday has been a champion of this much-needed infrastructure project, and she certainly understands its importance to those she represents as well as to the regional economy. Her insistence that the design accommodate a pedestrian and bike path won the day and was a significant improvement in the plan.

Government at all levels touches each of our lives in important ways, and it is critical that a community’s leaders have the ability to understand how to engage the cooperation of all levels of government and direct it to the city’s benefit. Leaders must know how to develop professional working relationships with state, federal, and other municipal officials to address the city’s needs. Mayor Holaday has consistently shown these abilities, and Newburyport is better off for it.

Mayor Holaday is committed to making Newburyport’s neighborhoods better places to live, work, and raise children. I am proud of the work we have done together and hope to continue it in the future.
