On Oct. 21, I attended the second of an ongoing lecture series hosted by Merrimack Valley Coastal Adaptation Workshop on storm surge. The presentation was given by Dr. Cameron Wake and described climate change and sea level rise. It was a thought-provoking evening and made me wonder about current and future public projects and our readiness as a coastal community.
As I left the auditorium, I wondered, was anyone from the mayor’s office there? Was anyone from the NRA there? Was anyone from the Planning Office there? How about NEMA?
It seems more than obvious that all public projects take into consideration the inevitable climate change and higher river and ocean levels that are destined to follow. It would be refreshing to see politicians seeking City Council seats or the mayor’s office address these issues in a public forum. We can no longer afford to kick the can down the street and force our grandchildren to pay the price.
