To the editor:

We would like to say thank you to all our friends and neighbors for their generous and enthusiastic support of this year's Boston Marathon run for Alzheimer's. We were able to reach the finish line and pass our fundraising goal with over $8,500 for the MA/NH Alzheimer's Association. All donations help to advance research and keep support services free to those in need.

Thank you to Immaculate Conception Parish and St. James Amesbury, Circuit Technology Center, Flatbread Co., Natural High Fitness, Crave, Hyman's Footwear, Darrell Cox Massage, The Screening Room , Rick Bayko Yankee Runner, The Grog, Alden Merrell, Life is Good, Plum Island Roaster and Lulu Lemon.

The 115th Boston Marathon is now part of history. Thanks to your generosity. One day Alzheimer's will be part of history too.

In chaos theory, the "butterfly effect" is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state.
The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane's formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before.

David M. Shribman: Respect for vets, confidence in military something we all agree on

In his now-forgotten statement proclaiming Memorial Day, the now-forgotten John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, urged Americans not to forget those who had died in the Civil War. It was only three years since the guns were silenced. The country was stitched together but still torn asunder. Much grief and hurt remained.

Town Meeting reaches out to DC

I was fortunate to have arrived on the early side of Tuesday evening's Town Meeting in Newbury because it gave me 20 minutes or so to venture through 71 pages of the Town Warrant.
There may have been fatter ones at some time over the 60 years of my residence, but I don't recall one more comprehensively engaged with regulatory complexities. There were about a hundred of us in attendance — enough to hold a Town Meeting, but not enough to appreciate just how much we have to deal with from state and federal authority.

Take a realistic look at Law of Sea Treaty

Senate Republicans, including the Bay State's Scott Brown, can demonstrate their independence from the party's loony-right fringe by joining Democrats in supporting the Law of the Sea Treaty.
In fact, while the U.S. has long been observing the main tenets of the pact that has been in force since 1994, it has little say in how it is administered, having failed to join the almost 200 countries that have endorsed it.
