Several students in the Amesbury school system have been recognized for their individual talents and hobbies.
Eighth-grader Evan Carter won the Amesbury Middle School geography bee for the second year in a row and has qualified to participate at the state geography bee. He will compete against the top 100 fourth- through eighth-grade students in the state at Clark University on April 4. The winner will receive $100, a globe and a trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C., where he or she will have the chance to win a $25,000 scholarship.
Jessica Conway and Patrick Hogan of Amesbury High School have been chosen to play in the annual Lions Club All-State Band in Lowell in May. Conway and Hogan were nominated by band teacher Tom Horan for their musical talent, character, enthusiasm and participation.
Chanelle Havey, an AHS sophomore, has been selected to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar in Washington, D.C., this summer. Havey will participate in leadership workshops with 500 students from around the globe. The seminar will feature guest speakers who are leaders in the fields of science and technology, media and politics, world affairs, humanitarian work and business.
Griffin Lausier, a senior at AHS, was honored with the 2008 Boston Bruins Ice Hockey Sportsmanship Award at the Boston Bruins game on March 27. Lausier was the sole Cape Ann League recipient of this annual award given by the Bruins and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Surfing the Internet can now benefit Amesbury High School. AHS has registered with two Web sites, www.goodsearch.com and www.goodshop.com, powered by Yahoo. Each time the search engine Good Search is used with AHS selected as the beneficiary, one cent will go to AHS.
At www.goodshop.com, purchases can be made with a percentage of the price going to AHS. Participating stores range from name brand clothing stores to iTunes, Wal-mart, Best Buy and more.

Last week an observer from the National Association for the Education of Young Children visited Amesbury Elementary School to complete the NAEYC accreditation process. NAEYC reviews all documents used in the classrooms and observations to accredited preschool and kindergarten programs nationally. AES will receive the results of the accreditation process within the next three months.

The 2008-2009 Amesbury Public Schools' budget will be voted on during the School Committee meeting tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the middle school.

Mayor Thatcher Kezer will assist the Amesbury Rotary Club in giving a dictionary to each third-grade student at Amesbury Elementary School tomorrow at 1 and 1:30 p.m. In March, Amesbury Rotary Club also provided each third-grader at Cashman Elementary with a dictionary.

Registration for kindergarten students has opened and will continue through April 17. Parents and guardians may register their children at their local district school between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A Kindergarten Parent Information Night is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in the Amesbury Elementary School. Proof of residence and the child's birth certificate are necessary for registration.

The annual AHS Spring Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Amesbury Middle School Performance Center. The school's band, jazz band and chorus will perform. Admission is $3.

The Amesbury Middle School Math Team is competing at Masconomet Regional Middle School Thursday. They have been practicing after school throughout the week.

Third- and fourth-grade students at the Cashman Elementary School are preparing for "Shining Stars," the annual CES talent show. They will perform on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria/gym. For more information, contact director Patty Bradley.

The PTA has organized a Science Fair at Amesbury Middle School on Saturday. Interactive science activities will be held in the gym from 9 a.m. to noon. At noon, the "Jeff Danger Science Ranger" show will run in the Performance Center. Science fair entries will be on display in the cafeteria from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Beginning Saturday, Revolution Prep will be running a SAT prep course at Amesbury High School. The course will run until June 4. It will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information is available at www.revolutionprep.com and from Sue Saurman, a guidance counselor at AHS.

The PTA is hosting Star Party, a two-hour program by the North Shore Amateur Astronomer's Club. The club will show participants what can be observed in the night sky and then run an outside telescope viewing. The event will be Sunday, April 6, at the Cashman Elementary School from 7 to 9 p.m.

Comedian and political satirist Jimmy Tingle will perform his Jimmy Tingle for President skit to benefit the AHS Grad Night 2008. The event will be held on Sunday, April 6, at the Lafayette Club in Amesbury. Doors open at 5 p.m. The show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $30 at Amesbury Industrial Supply, Maggie Sundae's or Fuller's Clothing Store.

Sixth-grade students at the middle school have been organizing into Greek city states in their Social Studies classes. The city states will compete in a Greek Festival on Tuesday, April 8. The day's events include athletic and academic competitions, Greek performances and a Greek banquet.

The Amesbury Middle School Drama Club will present "Mulan," a Disney musical, on April 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. in the Middle School Performance Center.

An online survey of the Amesbury public school libraries' services and programs will be running from April 2 through 18. Students will take the survey during the day. Parents can participate by taking the survey online. It can be found through any of the Amesbury school Web sites.
The Amesbury School Library Media Specialists are running the survey in partnership with the Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System. All participants will remain anonymous, and students may choose not to participate. The data will be used to set library goals for the next five years.
