Letter: Poverty czar is great idea

Published: April 16, 2008

To the editor:

I think that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is very wise to plan to create a poverty czar when she is elected president of the United States.

There needs to immediately be new national focus on addressing the needs of those who go without in this country. People should not feel afraid and alone and not be sure of concern at the federal level for the needs of those who do not have what they need.

As we begin to care more about the poor as a nation, solutions to all types of national challenges will arise, and a more beautiful future will unfold for us all, I think. I am so excited to hear of this plan the senator has to create a poverty czar.

Literally, I am inspired by this plan to create a czar to address the issue of poverty. I feel so hopeful that with more open discusion of these matters that more American decisions will arise. The poor, the mentally ill and homeless go without far too much in this country given the wealth that I feel is here, in this country, financially and intellectually and spiritually.

I feel that a czar will put the concern of ordinary Americans more in perspective and help to develop programs they want and value to eradicate the hideous nature of poverty that still exists today despite all the progress that has been made over the years.

People in this country should not live in a state of financial resignation and hopelessness when systems can be better nutured and created to help people begin to come forward and to develop new plans for the whole nation.

I look forward to hearing more ideas on a czar assigned to address poverty for the president.
