TMS Architects wins two design awards
MANCHESTER, N.H. — TMS Architects was the recipient of two out of the five awards for Excellence in Architecture presented at the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' 24th annual Awards Banquet at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.
Newburyport resident William Soupcoff of the AIA received a Merit Award for a private residence in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Designed by Soupcoff and Shannon Alther, also of the AIA, the self-sustaining home pays homage to the farmhouse that occupied the site from 1788 to 2004 while employing elements placing it firmly in the 21st century. The homeowners were motivated to re-create the traditional farmhouse vernacular, reuse as many of the old materials as possible, and employ local materials and craftsmen in the construction process. Jurors praised the traditional forms used with a more modern interpretation and commended the use of the many sustainable design elements.
TMS Architects also received an Honor Award for a private residence in Exeter, N.H. The project's architect, John Merkle of the AIA, was asked by the homeowners to make a small home, less than 600 square feet on the first floor, seem larger without expanding the footprint and make the small space more efficient and aesthetically integrated. Living space was incorporated into an existing porch and opened up the first-floor plan, providing an overall sense of space.
