Cabot Stain Inc., of Newburyport, last week had to recall about 24,000 cans of the deck cleaner because of a report of one container partially melting and emitting chlorine gas.
The voluntary recall of the Cabot Composite Deck Cleaner was made in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The chemical reaction can occur when a component in the product reacts with a foil residue on certain packages, a release from the company said.
Cabot Composite Deck Cleaner is a granular concentrate that is mixed with water to clean composite surfaces like decks, steps, fences, railings and siding. The product is sold in a two-pound plastic container and has the number 3502 listed at the bottom of the label.
The cleaner was sold from February 2007 through February 2008 for about $20 each at home improvement stores and hardware stores across the U.S.
