Gas prices reach new highs

Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have made a major jump, reaching a record high.

A statewide survey on Monday by AAA Southern New England found an average price of $3.38 per gallon for self-serve regular unleaded.

That's 19 cents more than a week ago and 15 cents more than the previous record of $3.23 set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A year ago, gas was averaging much less — $2.76 per gallon. But prices in Massachusetts remain 12 cents below the national figure of $3.50.
