Buddhist scholar discussing compassion

A 21st century Buddhist scholar presents "Cultivating Lovingkindness and Compassion" on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Belleville Congregational Church, 300 High St., Newburyport.

Khensur Rinpoche Jampa Tegchok was a young monk at the Sera Je Monastery who fled Tibet when the Chinese forces occupied his homeland. Of more than 5,000 monks at the Sera Je, only about 300 survived to start the Sera Je Monastery again in Southern India.

Under the guidance of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan community in exile has attempted to meet violence with peace. The generation of compassion, even in the face of the occupation of their homeland, is one of the main tenets of the Buddhist way of life. Khensur Rinpoche, a former abbot at Sara Je, will speak on the benefits of this practice of peace and compassion.

A $15 donation is requested. Call The Healing Dharma Center at 978-363-2063 or e-mail healingdharmacenter@earthlink.net.
