Undressing vaudeville; Port performer offers behind-the-scenes look at the art

Once the mainstay of the entertainment industry, vaudeville is all but forgotten today.
Reg Bacon wants to change that.
From the late 19th century to the early years of the Great Depression, Bacon said nearly every town in the country had a venue where people could watch singers, dancers, jugglers, musicians, comedians, contortionists, magicians, ventriloquists, performing animals and who knows what else.

For Pam Dodge, the knitting gene runs in her family. Her mom and grandmother knit, and she picked it up from them when she was just a teenager.
Now, the West Newbury woman has shared the fiber art with her 10-year-old daughter, Christine, who knits and also makes beaded jewelry.

Dan Potter grew up in a family of clowns, for real.
The Merrimac resident describes himself as a third-generation clown, following in the antics of his grandmother, parents, aunt and uncle. He started clowning at age 5, and with his sisters became part of the family business for a while.

No need to knead

1While their toddlers learned to play the xylophone in a Minneapolis music class, Hertzberg began telling Francois about his no-knead, 5-minute mix of flour, salt, yeast and water.
Made in large batches, the dough can be refrigerated for weeks and baked one loaf at a time by simply cutting off a piece, letting it rise, shaping and baking. Trained in traditional methods, Francois was skeptical, but she saw promise in the chemistry Hertzberg was selling: a wetter-than-average dough that was easier to handle and simple to work with.

Festive and germ-free; Don't let the flu crash your holiday party

Is it safe to party when swine flu threatens to crash your bash?
It's a question many revelers may be asking this year as the holiday party season coincides with an anxiety-provoking flu season.
The good news is that while it is true that mingling over punch and canapes can help spread the H1N1 virus, health and entertaining experts say it's possible to throw a holiday party without making everyone wear surgical masks and hazmat suits.

A Broader View: Captured on tape and mdash; your every move

I remember years ago when I worked at a cable system office, some elderly folks calling to ask if we could see them through their television sets. I used to get a real chuckle out of that. The idea that they actually thought we were monitoring their actions through their LCD screen seemed absurd. Now I'm right there with them, wondering if the folks at Bic can see me through the tip of my pen or if the employees at Gap are laughing when they review the tape from the monitoring device they may have placed in my new "sexy boot cut" jeans. ("What's she doing in those?")

Tim's Tips: Still time to plant bulbs, apply lime

The leaves are dropping off the trees, and the trees are taking on their winter look. Yuck! Time to rake the leaves.
Speaking of leaves, I was telling you about composting the leaves in your yard. If you mix some of the grass clippings in with the leaves, it greatly speeds up the composting process. If you think forward to spring, you have lots of grass clippings, but very few leaves to mix in to help speed up the composting process. This fall, get some heavy-duty plastic bags and fill the bags with leaves. Store the bags near your compost pile. In the spring, you can take some of the leaves out of the bags and mix them in with the grass clippings. Add in some compost activator, and you will have a compost pile that will be humming along and producing finished compost in no time at all.
