Committee seeks ideas for rec site use Cherry Hill site
NEWBURYPORT — The Open Space Committee will hold an informational meeting next week for the Cherry Hill neighborhood, in hopes of hearing more from those residents as to what recreational facilities they would like to see near them.
Mary Harbaugh, committee chairman, said yesterday the group, working with the Parks and Recreation Commission, is exploring early plans for the Cherry Hill recreation site — the playing fields on Daniel Lucey Way across from the KinderCare on Storey Avenue.
Currently, there is a soccer field on the 9 acres of city-owned land.
As part of the committee's goal to find more space for active recreation, the group would like to receive input and ideas for expanding that use, Harbaugh said. Formed in 2001, the committee was given the task of identifying open land in the city that could be used by residents.
Much of the feedback committee members have been hearing is that there is a need for more playing fields, she said.
Ideas for the area could also include purchasing some of the state-owned land abutting the field, Harbaugh said, which could possibly double the amount of recreational space.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at the KinderCare Learning Center, 1 Daniel Lucey Way.
