May 06, 2008 03:52 am Students and faculty at Cashman Elementary School are preparing for the third annual Junior Relay for Life, a day of reflection for veterans and in honor of those who have been affected by cancer. On May 23 at 9 a.m., Cashman students and staff will gather for a memorial service around the flag which was flown for them in Iraq by Sgt. Chad Freeman of the U.S. Army. From there, students will proceed to the baseball field, where they will walk throughout the day. Money raised from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Last year, Cashman Elementary students raised more than $3,000. After the faculty matched the students' donation, the school was able to give the American Cancer Society more than $6,000. Students recently brought home piggy banks, which they will fill and return to school. On May 12, students will decorate luminarias during class. Each luminaria will be decorated in honor of those who have cancer or have had the disease. The first Junior Relay for Life was held at Salisbury Elementary School four years ago. Cashman Elementary School third-grade teacher Karen Iworsky explained that her school adopted the idea because "it was time to start an awareness program here and give hope for a cure." nnn Iworsky is looking for the addresses of local men and women serving in the military so that students can send them cards and care packages. Families with information may call Cashman Elementary School at 978-388-4407. nnn Tuesday, May 6 is Walking School Bus Day at Cashman Elementary School. If mmiddle-schoolers find the puzzle pieces, they will be entered into a lottery. Puzzle pieces should be turned in to Susan Olsen or Ann Bartkiewicz and will be added to the puzzle outside the art rooms. nnn Amesbury Elementary School students in Suzanne Morin's third-grade class have been keeping track of how much they walk during the school day by using pedometers. In six days, the students' combined mileage reached 160. nnn Firefighter Ozzy visited Amesbury Elementary School students as a part of SAFE, Student Awareness of Fire Education.
